Xergy Corporate Manifesto
Xergy Incorporated was founded in 2009, as a high-technology start-up venture. Xergy is the world leader in the development and commercialization of ion exchange media, and devices based on these materials. Our mission at Xergy’s is to leverage our ‘core technology’ with advanced ion exchange media to create high value and high eco-impact devices based on these materials.
As of 2019, the company had over 100 active patent cases, and has entered programs to commercialize this technology with many global F500 companies. Xergy Inc. was the International Prize winner of the GE-Ecomagination award in 2011 and has been a finalist in many the Cleantech Awards since then. In addition, Xergy has won numerous Government grants to develop advanced devices based on these materials.
In naming our company, we wanted to capture ‘our purpose’. To help symbolize our mission we have borrowed from the thermodynamic term, Exergy. Exergy, is a measure of the maximum useful work (Maximus Utilis Opus) that a system can perform. It is a simple fact that ionic systems exhibit inherently higher Exergy Efficiency, than alternative energy conversion systems. Therefore, we believe ionic systems can be the basis for huge opportunities to create new, transformational products.
The term Exergy, sometimes referenced as a letter B, or the Greek letter (Xi) Ξ in engineering references. We have taken the symbol for Exergy (Xi) Ξ, and modified it a little to make it appear more 'electrochemical' with a shorter middle line, to symbolize two batteries facing one another vertically. We made it appear more like a Latin X. We have also dropped the “e” and named our company Xergy to support our logo!
Prior to starting Xergy Inc., our founder, Bamdad Bahar was the General Manager of Teledyne Energy Systems (MD), a division of Teledyne Technologies Inc. (MD). He led the Transformation of this unit from a low/slow growth division to 20X its valuation within 2 years and a unit of key strategic value to Teledyne Inc. Prior to joining Teledyne he was the Business Leader of W.L. Gore’s Ion Transport Products unit, where he led team that developed and filed many patents for a new membrane product line to create an ultra-thin, ultra-strong, and ultra-high-performance composite ion exchange membrane for Fuel Cells and other Electrochemical devices. He led the business from Zero to $20 Million in sales within 3 years with record profitability and without a single negative quarter.
Bamdad brings to Xergy a resume filled with successful business unit leadership that have cumulatively generated over $1 Billion in profitable revenues in this area for the past 20 years. And he has also led innovation successfully with numerous new product commercialization. He has been an inventor or co-inventor in more than 100 patents in the field of membranes, porous media, ion exchange media and electrochemical applications.
Xergy Inc. was founded on the premise that composite ion exchange membranes are still in their infancy, and are an excellent platform to build new, transformational and disruptive electrochemical products or systems. Moreover, many of these new products can have meaningful impact on our planet and the situation we are facing as a human race. There are many other benefits to the Xergy technology that can be realized depending on the specific application - such as in refrigerators, heat pumps, electronic cooling systems, automotive cooling systems. Ionics technology is transformational and disruptive, and will revolutionize energy conversion systems globally, resulting in important environmental benefits. Xergy has also developed many other products from its R&D efforts including advanced ion exchange membranes, catalyst coated membranes, micro-humidity control device, energy recovery ventilator systems, desalination and waste processing systems, gas storage devices, and ozone disinfection systems to name a few. Xergy has partnered with many leading Universities to advance this technology further.
We believe Ionic Systems are a crucial technology that can be the basis of products that will make very significant contributions to improving our environment. With huge shifts in population, and almost exponential growth in demand globally for energy we believe our work is more critical than ever!
Xergy operates a matrix management structure, with very high emphasis on creativity and individual responsibility. Associates rank each other twice a year. Every year, half of our employees, the top contributors, receive stock option bonuses. Our aim is to create a high “exergy” environment where every associate is free to maximize their contribution i.e. perform maximum useful work (“Personal Exergy”) for the enterprise; and then be rewarded for doing so by becoming a partner in our company through stock ownership.
All effort is regularly reviewed by team members and peers. Everyone is encouraged to work with team members to meet objectives. There are no bosses, but we do have leaders who guide other team members and that take responsibility for group effort. Leaders naturally emerge or rise in our company and we seek leaders who have followers. This becomes evident through our company’s widespread and regular input/ranking process. We design our projects so that teams work together in tight knit small groups, and have good knowledge of their peer’s contributions, with very open communication systems.
We are a technology driven enterprise. We develop new technology platforms and then seek market applications for them. Our goal is to develop unique, proprietary, highly valuable, knowledge intensive ‘technology platforms’ that offer many different product opportunities; and then develop well thought out strategies to seek and select business opportunities for those potential products. Once a target is selected, we are very focused to ‘drive home’ business opportunities with a sense of urgency.
We organize our teams and businesses around these technology platforms. We expect our teams to be leaders globally in the technology arena they are in and be recognized leaders in their specific business segments.
